One of our core values here at Grace Church is The Bible, Our Authority. We believe and embrace the Bible as God’s Word. It is the truth which firms up the foundations of our lives and helps us to stand as we live in these turbulent times. To get better grounded in the truths taught in the Bible, we have launched a year long initiative for 2018, Saturating Our Hearts with God’s Truth. We have selected as our primary tool the recently published New City Catechism. Now this may raise questions for many. Questions like:
What is catechism?
A catechism (kat’-ə-kism) is a method of teaching that uses a question-and-answer format (the Greek word, katechein, means to teach orally or to instruct by word of mouth). The teacher, recites the question and the pupils respond with the answer. Like the slow drip, drip, drip, drop of water that saturates the soil around a seedling, reciting questions and answers each day saturates our minds with God’s truth. For centuries, the church has used catechisms as a tool to instruct students in the basic truths of the Bible. The Heidelberg and Westminster are the two most widely used catechisms in the church today.
Why use catechism?
Catechism is used to teach the core doctrines of Christianity. This method of memorization and recitation is ideal for all ages.
Why the New City Catechism?
The New City Catechism is a modern-day resource aimed at reintroducing this ancient method of teaching to Christians today. This short book lays out 52 questions and answers related to God, human nature, sin, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and more. Whether devotionally, recited orally, or memorized over the course of a year, individuals, families, and small Bible study groups will benefit from this simple tool that teaches the core doctrines of the Christian faith. Books are available, free of charge, in the lobby at our Hospitality Center. (A companion devotional book is available at amazon.com).
In addition, the catechism is available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices and can also be accessed via a web app. The New City Catechism mobile app makes it easy to take all 52 questions and answers with you wherever you go. The free app also includes suggested Scripture readings, short prayers, and devotional commentary, as well as kid-friendly songs designed to help children memorize each question and answer. Most of these tools are also available on the New City Catechism web app.
What are people saying about the New City Catechism?
“One of the best ways to use our time in this age is to pass on our faith to others. The New City Catechism Devotional is perhaps the most concise and accessible resource I have read—the questions are immediately relevant in every culture, the language is easily understood or translatable, and the brilliance of the gospel radiates in every page.” (Gloria Furman, author, The Pastor’s Wife; Missional Motherhood; and Alive in Him.)
“I wanted to thank the leadership for this new initiative for the year. The New City Catechism is excellent. I’m enjoying memorizing the questions and answers and find myself reciting them when I can’t sleep or during quiet times throughout the day. I realized that I’m using the words often when I pray.” (a member of Grace Church).
Our Sunday morning services are held at 9:00 and 10:30. We invite one and all to join us on this journey, learning the truth that Jesus says will “set us free!”
