For a number of years we have designated one summer Sunday as our “Church in the Park” Sunday. On this particular Sunday morning, we conduct our 9:00 traditional service as usual (hmm… seems fitting for a traditional service!). But then we move our 10:30 contemporary service to 11:00 and instead of meeting on our church campus we gather in Lancaster County Park. We conclude the service with a baptism celebration in the Conestoga River followed by a potluck lunch. It always proves to be one of the highlights of our church family’s year!
Now why “Church in the Park?” After all, it takes a lot of work to put it all together. We do this for a couple of reasons. Worshiping God in the great outdoors is a wonderful experience. Given the fact that creation has the fingerprints of the God we worship all over it, worshiping the Creator in the midst of his creation always seems to draw us closer to him. In addition, gathering as a church outside of our church facility and in a community park reminds us that Grace Church is not the facility located at 300 Willow Valley Square in Lancaster, PA. No. The church is the people who most Sunday mornings happen to gather at 3oo Willow Valley Square. And this people, this family of believers in Jesus Christ (who happens to be us!) is called to share the love of Christ in our community and to the world beyond. “Church in the Park” is a good reminder of this important calling!
If you are reading this post, I hope you can join us on Sunday August 28th in Lancaster County Park (Pavilion 2). We get started at 11:oo am and will go until ????
